CONDITIONS OF THE HEART
CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE
Coronary artery disease is a condition that restricts blood flow to the heart due to the accumulation of plaque in the coronary arteries.
IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT
An irregular heartbeat is called an arrhythmia and occurs due to poorly coordinated electric signals stimulating the heart's function.
HEART FAILURE
Heart failure refers to a condition whereby the heart cannot pump and thus supply blood to other regions of the body.
VALVULAR HEART DISEASE
Valvular heart disease arises when any one of the heart's valves are damaged
CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
Congenital heart disease refers to several congenital abnormalities affecting the heart. Traditional signs of congenital heart disease include fatigue, heart murmurs and difficulty breathing.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AFFECTING THE HEART
Medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity and high cholesterol can affect the heart muscle’s performance.
HEART PROCEDURES
CORONARY ANGIOGRAM
A coronary angiogram combines x-ray imaging and contrast dye to assess blood vessels nourishing the heart muscle.
PERCUTANEOUS CORONARY INTERVENTION
Percutaneous coronary intervention is a procedure to reopen a blocked coronary artery supplying blood to the heart.
ECHOCARDIOGRAM
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan using a tiny probe to evaluate the heart and surrounding blood vessels.
TRANSOESOPHAGEAL ECHO
A transoesophageal echo probe is similar to the echocardiogram, except the ultrasound probe is swallowed and the heart is visualised from behind so that the organ may be visualised in greater detail and provide a better assessment.
ELECTRICAL CARDIOVERSION
Electrical cardioversion makes use of a machine and electrodes to deliver sudden low doses of energy to the patient’s chest to restore the heart’s rhythm.
PACEMAKER IMPLANTS
A pacemaker is a device placed inside the chest underneath the collarbone to speed up a dangerously slow heartbeat.
